Definitions of Senior Housing Options
Independent Living (Rental)
Not licensed, no restrictions apply except age and/or income (in some cases). The service fees may include one or more of the following: housekeeping, one or more meals daily, transportation, activities. Any assistance with personal care is obtained through an agency or other private source.
Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE)
A licensed facility also known as assisted living, board and care or senior residences. Provides non-medical care and supervision in a residential setting. Services or “levels of care” provide one or more of the following: assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming; medication monitoring; special diets; provision or arrangement of transportation. Some RCFE’s provide specialized care and supervision for persons with memory loss caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other disorders.
Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF)
A licensed health facility, or a distinct part of a hospital or skilled nursing facility, that provides inpatient care to patients who have need for skilled nursing supervision and need supportive care, but who do not require continuous nursing care.
Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNF)
A licensed facility that provides 24-hour nursing care, medical monitoring and supervision, as well as rehabilitation services including physical, occupational, speech and respiratory therapies. These facilities also provide supportive care to patients whose primary need is for personal care and nursing supervision on an extended basis. Often they are called nursing homes or convalescent hospitals.
Hospitals
Licensed and regulated by the Department of Health Services. Also known as acute care, rehabilitation hospital and sub-acute care hospital.
